Stretching test for the hip joint flexor
In a supine position on a bench or table, grasp one knee with both hands and draw it towards the chest until the lumbar spine is lying flat on the supporting surface. The thigh of the other leg is horizontal and the lower part of the leg at right angles to it.
Failure to achieve a horizontal position of the thigh indicates a shortening of the hip joint flexor muscle. If the lower part of the leg does not form a right angle with respect to the thigh, a shortening of the anterior thigh is indicated.
Testing the strength of the abdominal muscles
A properly trained abdominal musculature is not only necessary for the achievement of high level sporting performance, but also represents the best protection against unilateral overloading and the resultant premature wear and tear to the spine and hips.

Mobility test for the torso muscles
Whilst kneeling or standing and with the upper body vertically disposed, drop slowly into, respectively, a kneeling or crouching position. A straight or kyphosis or bulging of the lumbar spine must arise from a hollow or lordosis of the lumbar spine. Slowly repeat this exercise several times, ensuring that the abdominal muscles are tensed during the flexing movement and that the buttock muscles are tensed during the extension movement.
Whilst standing, tense the gluteal musculature with lordosis of the lumbar spine, whilst standing crouched down and with the upper body vertically disposed tense the abdominal muscles, with kyphosis of the lumbar spine. If this squatting movement with a vertical upper body cannot be accomplished with a fluid transition from lordosis to kyphosis a disturbance of the torso flexing and extension movement is indicated.
If during the movement in the kneeling/sitting position, the lumbar lordosis or hollowing is retained and during extension the gluteal muscles remain relaxed, a disturbance of the torso flexing and extension movement is indicated.
