Today, indeed the reputation of each and every judge is being questioned, and the adjudicator is no exception to this. There are thus skaters who no longer submit unconditionally to the scorers. One goes even further: "I don’t skate for the adjudicator at all," claimed the Grazer, Edi Lanz.

The body runs as a team (From the series:  "We'll get you moving" Parts 1 & 2) - Running technique
Body running presents itself  as a new running technique.  It doesn’t leave the running to the legs alone but rather shows that the body comprises a complete team. In other words: head, torso, shoulder, arms and pelvis  play roles during running that are as important as those of the legs and feet. The five rules of body running are: gravity, backwards and forwards  motion, steps, posture, number of steps. You can read more about this in the first and second part of the Kleine Zeitung series, "We'll get you moving."

Shifting breathing from the mouth to the nose whilst running protects the body from over exertion. To change from mouth breathing to nasal breathing takes two to three weeks. Concentrate on breathing at a comfortable walking pace.

Don’t take running to seriously.  Through this, the body gains a lot of energy and neck pain is avoided. The lighter and looser the shoulders are during running, the more harmonious the movement is. Only shoulders that hang in a relaxed way can compensate  leg and hip movements and maintain balance.

The torso as accelerator pedal - running technique

The more a runner leans forward with the upper body, the faster he or she will move forward.  At the same time, less effort is required from the legs. An elongated, forward leaning body works like an accelerator pedal which can be used to set the running speed. Don’t run with a bowed head but rather with a straight neck and looking ahead.

Be sporty safely 
Actively doing sports means living a longer and healthier life. Sport however also includes little aches and pains and minor injuries are often unavoidable. Pain is in principle not negative though, says sports physician Eduard Lanz:  "Pain is rather something positive that reveals the bodies physical limits and indicates a bodily malfunction."
According to Lanz, three points are crucial,: 1 Stretching exercises, 2. Gymnastic Exercises and 3. Cartilage regeneration.
Unfortunately however, even the best preventative strategy doesn’t always work  - sports injuries are frequently simply hard to avoid:
1. Strains: One should try to stretch cautiously and slowly. A torn muscle will be very painful whereas a strain will not. Tears should be treated as quickly as possible with an elastic pressure binding.
2. Muscle hardening:  The application of warmth using bandages , warm packs or radiation resolves the hardening of the muscle tissue.
3. Swelling:  Cold bandages or pressure bindings  to prevent  bleeding. 


So that it runs like a well-oiled machine
Gymnastics, ointments and dietary supplements ensure that the joints stay fit.  Together with six other specialists, Dr Lanz has developed a dietary supplement that protects cartilage and connective tissue and improves joint lubrication. "The capsules are not just recommended for athletes. They can also help young people during the growth phase and act preventatively," says  Dr Lanz.  Daily exercise is however more important than any medicine  according to Dr Lanz. " Stretching exercises are especially  advisable because shortened muscles are the main problem associated with osteoarthrosis. "

Development for Lamborghini
Three Styrians are building and developing new seats for the Italian luxury car maker. It all started with a project for the Lamborghini parent company, Audi. The orthopedist Eduard Lanz is building two car seats together with Erwin Deutscher’s company, Concept Technology in Gratkorn. "To show what is orthopedically possible , to optimally relieve both back and neck," said Lanz. The team has been further joined by the saddler, Christian Pilich.

A sports physician for Austria's tennis high society 
Everyone who has followed the games of Austria’s Davis Cup or Fed Cup teams on television has already noticed Eduard Lanz. The Grazer  sits quietly, whilst  the Austrian Tennis Association captains cheer on their players . He is the team physician for the best national tennis. The 55 year old orthopedist has long been a country wide capacity where sports Injuries are concerned  (www.sportarzt.at). Lanz’s work is usually finished before the players walk onto the pitch. "I am primarily responsible for injury prevention." If Lanz had his way, he would order all tennis players to stretch before playing.

Down to the bare bones 
Osteoarthrosis, caused by damage to the articular cartilage, is a common disease. Arthrosis cannot heal by itself. Doctors try to bring relief to sufferers with painkillers, injections and movement therapy. Rubbing, cracking or grating in the joints - many people know this pain. Articular cartilage damage is only a matter of time - after a certain age almost everyone has it. In the western world about six to eight percent of all people are affected - in Austria about half a million people. Although osteoarthrosis is primarily an age-related phenomenon, it can also cause joint deterioration during early years due to inborn defects, or as a result of overloading or accidents.

The heart of an athlete instead of back pain
 
A study conducted last year by the Association of Business Executives showed that 18% of the over 300 managers surveyed have musculoskeletal problems. According to this, back pain is the No. 1 health problem at the red-white-red management level.  The sports physician and orthopedic specialist Eduard Lanz is only moderately surprised by this result. As well as optimal body posture support, movement is also essential. This can be achieved for example through exercise. This includes, among other things, stretching, which gives the body balance. It doesn’t matter what sport is carried out. "It has to be fun," says orthopedist, Dr Lanz.

Seven of us in Paris in the main draw
Austria is represented by seven players in the main competition at the French Open in Paris (starting  27th May 2007). Pain in the neck

Thomas Muster and Michael Stich about their legendary Davis Cup battle 13 years ago in Unterpremstätten near Graz
 
There will probably be a lot of memories awakened when Thomas Marks goes up against Michael Stich during the Champions Tour match in Graz. It was the 27th  March 1994, Davis Cup Austria versus Germany. After 5:24 hours Thomas Muster fell cheering on his back. 11000 fans were beside themselves. The next morning, Thomas Muster woke with intense back pain. This could however be lessened by  therapy from  Dr Eduard Lanz, the Graz specialist in orthopedics, orthopedic surgery and sports orthopedics and Willy Dungl.

Tennis elbow - golf elbow I
You do not even need to play tennis or golf to get the typical symptoms in the elbow area, which one will often suffer for a very long time. That said, these complaints are most commonly associated with tennis and golf.
The main symptom of tennis elbow is a pronounced pressure pain on the outside of the elbow. A similar phenomenon on the inner side can also occur - this is called golf elbow.
This condition stems from elevated tension of the extensor and flexor muscles of the forearm. A hard muscle is always also shortened. As a result the tendons, via which the muscles are attached to the bone, are under constant traction. This causes a disruption of their blood supply and inflammation. This chronic stress prevents recovery.
Tennis and golf elbow are also related to the spine. The cervical spine in particular can thus contribute to the symptoms of tennis or golf arm.

This newspaper article is about the treatment of tennis or golf elbow. Not only the doctor but also the affected person should contribute to obtaining relief. The main objective is to eliminate the cause of the muscular tightness in the arm and neck area. Stretching exercises and loosening of the blockages by targeted mobilization are suitable for this. Tensions are treated with warming ointments.
Manual stretching and mobilization of blocked segments in the cervical spine should be carried by a skilled practitioner.  An operation must only be considered in rare cases.

Exercise and sleep to help joints
 
Walking incorrectly, sitting wrongly,  lifting loads incorrectly: the consequences are uneven wear and eventually pain. One can however influence the musculoskeletal system oneself through specific exercises: through specific stretching and strengthening exercises and the right bed. These precautions strengthen the abdominal and buttock muscles  which support the spine. An unsuitable beds also leads to muscle tension and sleep disturbance. You should check whether your mattress and mattress support meet your needs adequately.

Regeneration of cartilage by dietary supplementation

Joint pain torments elite athletes in particular but also young people in the  growth phase and their grandparents, who have to struggle with wear and tear caused by aging. Dr Eduard Lanz recommends proper exercise and the dietary supplement Arthrobene. When a joint is placed under stress, water is squeezed out of the cartilage. In this way, it slides on a liquid film almost without  friction. In other words we have a permanent hydroplaning effect in our joints. Afterwards, water must be sucked in again and saved for subsequent stress, which is carried out by the compounds  glucosamine and chondroitin. Dr Lanz used all Arthrobene products whilst the team physician for the Tennis Davis Cup and Fed Cup. They are both very effective and free of doping substances.  The athletes cared for by Dr Lanz at the world cycling championship in Salzburg also used Arthrobene.

Cruciate ligament rupture, Part 1
 
Training errors are the main causes of this knee injury, which is occurring with increasing frequency amongst both  recreational and professionals athletes - primarily unilateral strength training. The more strongly  the muscle at the front of the thigh pulls over the kneecap, the greater the stress, especially on the anterior cruciate ligament. Whilst training, special attention should be paid to constant alternation between  tension and relaxation. As a basic principle, optimum sports performance is provided by  the interplay of the elasticity of tendons and use of the muscles. Stretching exercises, gymnastics, aerobics and sports like cycling, running and swimming  are especially suitable forms of training for the knee joints and leg muscles. A sensible diet and targeted food supplementation are also very important.

Cruciate ligament rupture, Part 2

When a cruciate ligament is torn, it must be operated on. A complete tear can never grow together again without assistance. The cruciate ligament is not sewn together during surgery, but rather replaced by reconstructed tendon. One therefore speaks of a cruciate ligament reconstruction. The subsequent rehabilitation or targeted restorative training  is of paramount importance. Symptoms such as pain, swelling and restricted movement can be well-controlled by a combination of natural means and drugs. The most important measure for improving joint stability and the prevention of osteoarthrosis is a gymnastics program for the stretching of shortened muscles, muscle strengthening and improvement of  the movement pattern.

What ‘s wrong with Tamira?
For some time,  tennis ace Tamira Paszek has been repeatedly plagued by health problems. The 17-year-old is already getting frustrated. Her ordeal began in autumn of  2007 with a pinched diaphragm. Neck problems and a flu-like infection followed this. Finally, she also had to deal with stomach problems. Regarding  the question as to whether her  body has not grown sufficiently for the pressures of professional sport, Davis Cup and Fed Cup team physician Dr Edi Lanz says: "Certainly not, it is simply exposed to many negative factors such as the constant time shift.  Also, when the body is placed under such stress, one feels every little complaint. "

Question to Dr Lanz: muscle torn during tennis match
 
A tennis player has torn his left calf muscle during a game of tennis. How long a break must one  take after such an injury, how should one properly warm up and when should one stretch?  Dr  Lanz replied:  A torn muscle should actually be fully healed after about ten days. One should always warm up with stretching exercises. In this way you will activate metabolism, even without an increased energy demand. After warming up, the athlete should seek to increase agility through gymnastics. When stretching before sport each position should be maintained for at least five seconds. The tension should only be felt in the muscles (i.e. not in the joints).

The double fault before the first service

Tennis players’ aches and pains are homemade. Stretching and warming-up is a simple way to confound the injury devil.  "With sport, warming up is half the battle," says sports physician Dr Edi Lanz who continued, "I am amazed that people are more willing to endure pain than to do a couple of exercises before sport ".  It is also crystal clear for him that: "In tennis, one is in one way or another to blame for all complaints. Because there is no direct contact with the opponent as in say football, the injuries are homemade." Thus, according to Dr Lanz, it is child’s play to avoid typical chronic complaints such as tennis elbow or discomfort in the ankle, knee and spine ". In this article, he gives special tips to protect against physical injuries.

Stretch, strengthen, move
 
Since pain in the musculoskeletal area is indicative of dysfunction, symptom-oriented  therapy should always be accompanied by treatment of the underlying dysfunction. Alongside drug therapy,  acute pain therapy includes different interventional and physical measures. The sports medicine specialist Dr Eduard Lanz spoke in Schladming about ways to correct functional problems during the training event,  "Pain - an interdisciplinary challenge" organized by Astellas Pharma.

Question to Dr Lanz: Constant problems with both knees
 
A patient has suffered pain in both knees for half a year. Injections and physical treatments have not helped. Now, an operation is being considered. Dr Lanz replied:  According to the X-ray and ultrasound findings provided, there is significant injury to the articular cartilage on the insides of both knees, and as well as this to the cartilage behind the kneecap. In this case one speaks of a so-called activated osteoarthrosis of both knees. Recommendations:  stretching exercises for the leg muscles, physiotherapy, anti-rheumatics (drugs) if necessary, cold compresses and dietary supplements. If an operation is unavoidable, arthroscopy is recommended. If this is unsuccessful,  artificial knee joints should be inserted.

Cross-trainers and knee problems
Gymnastics is important for the treatment of knee problems. The cross-trainer is intended primarily for cardiovascular training and thus has no specific value for knee rehabilitation. 


Trouble with the lower back 
The new car seat concept from Dr Lanz helps motorists with back problems. This orthopedic development was discussed for the first time with car seat manufacturers at Austria's most important automotive congress, the Automobile Forum in Graz.

How safe and relaxing are car seats? The orthopedic specialist Dr Lanz dedicated his presentation to this issue.


The car seat as jumping net 
Most car seats provide no protection during a rear impact and are actually a danger for the driver. The impact is not absorbed and the driver is injured by the actuators in the backrest and by the so-called lumbar support.  Dr Lanz therefore calls for a new car seat concept.

Now seats with movement
A good car seat is defined by the extent to which it can be adjusted to the shape of the musculoskeletal system. The way in which the human body functions is however forgotten.  Dr Lanz, a specialist in the musculoskeletal system, medical director of the Institute for Movement Therapy and care provider for competitive athletes has developed a new patented concept for car seats which incorporates knowledge of sports medicine into the car seat development process. 


The Test: How fit your back is
Simple tests and exercises for patients with back pain are demonstrated since dysfunctions of the musculoskeletal system must also be functionally treated. Pain therapy for back pain without functional improvement shows provides no long-term benefit.
