Barefoot, feet parallel, deep squats, heels in constant contact with the underlying surface. If the buttocks do not reach the close vicinity of the heel, shortening of the calf muscles is indicated.
Anterior thigh stretching test.
The anterior thigh muscles have the task of straightening the knee and/or flexing the hip. They have a tendency to shorten, which leads to irritation and pain in the tendon attachments, the upper and lower border of the patella and the tibia head (“Jumpers knee”)
Shortening of this muscle is also associated with the development of a hollow back.
Prone position; legs together, left hand grasps the left foot and pulls the heel towards the buttocks. Pelvis should not be lifted from the supporting surface.
If the heels do not reach the buttocks, the anterior thigh is shortened
Posterior thigh stretching test.
The posterior thigh muscles have the task of flexing the knee and/or stretching the hip. They have a tendency to shorten, with the resultant symptoms typically in the area of the ischium (sciatica) or on the inside or outside of the knee joint.
In a supine position, left leg flexed; grasp the right leg with both hands (knee joint straightened and ankle joint flexed) and draw it towards the upper body until it reaches an angle of
90 °. If this angle is not reached, shortening of the posterior thigh is indicated.
