Functional test

Mobility test for the cervical spine:
Functional tests can be used to determine whether headache, shoulder or arm pain stem from the cervical spine. The degree of mobility is examined, and also, whilst turning the head,

• the degree of asymmetry between right and left, and
• the so-called “end feel”, i.e. whether the position of maximum rotation is hard and painful, or soft and elastic.

1. Dysfunction of the upper cervical spine:
Restricted head rotation when bending the head forwards as far as possible (cause of headaches).

2. Dysfunction of the middle cervical spine:
Restricted head rotation with the head in the normal position (cause of headaches and shoulder and arm pain).

3. Dysfunction of the lower cervical spine:
Restricted head rotation when bending the head backwards as far as possible (cause of shoulder and arm pain).
